It’s dark as Elliott Garrett heads home on a deserted, rural two-lane highway, thinking of his beautiful wife and infant daughter waiting for him in Raleigh, North Carolina. But Elliott doesn’t know that behind the next set of oncoming headlights is an ugly chapter of his life he thought was safely in the past – and that this moment, it’s coming back over the horizon and heading straight for him. When Elliott never arrives home, his grieving wife brings in young legal investigator J. Davis Swaine III to find out what exactly happened to her husband on that shadowy highway and who is behind it. Swaine, raised working class and now in the employ of one of the South’s top civil trial firms, has seen more human vice and misery in his short career than most adults ever will – he’s even killed a man himself. But nothing can prepare him for the series of killings that is coming, nor for the vindictiveness and hatred behind them. And, because Jeff’s new girlfriend is Elliott Garrett’s sister in law, how intensely personal this case will become. In this follow-up to the bestselling mystery Felonious Jazz, Bryan Gilmer illuminates both the disturbingly understandable motivations of his villain and the not-always-heroic thoughts and drives of his protagonist. This is a crime thriller with brains, a novel that shows us the complexity of the real New American South, where multinational corporations neighbor centuries-old tobacco farms, and where the past is never truly resolved – even when it’s hidden beneath a glossy 21st century veneer. “Bryan Gilmer steers us on a tense thrill ride through the real New South. Gilmer writes what he knows, and knows of what he writes.” -- Bryan Gruley - author of The Skeleton Box, a Starvation Lake mystery ““It’s fast-paced and full of surprises, right through the last page, and the use of local color is absolutely perfect. This one deserves a place on your or bookshelf.” J.D. Rhoades - author of Gallows Pole and Breaking Cover

High school can be a traumatic experience for some students. It certainly was for Jamey Epps, who managed to hold his grudges for ten years. Then came the time when his plan to payback set off his elaborate plans at revenge. In this break-neck speed thriller, Bryan Gilmer shows a real knack for keeping the reader second guessing. His knowledge of the locations - local to me, which made it more enjoyable - and the descriptions of the, sometimes, understandable reasoning of the villain's mind, show a talent which compares with the best thriller novelists.
In RECORD OF WRONGS Bryan Gilmer has further developed a great leading character which started (I believe) with FELONIOUS JAZZ. Jeff Davis Swaine is on par with Nero Wolfe (without the put-off eccentricities)and Alex Cross (without the gore). Gilmer is an innovative story teller. He weaves his characters superbly and gives them just enough depth to make them interesting without being ponderous. His scenic paint brush is just as sparing yet effective. The end result is a lean and mean page turner. Add Bryan Gilmer your "Must Read Mystery Authors" list and if you have not read FELONIOUS JAZZ get that along with RECORD OF WRONGS.
I could not read this brisk, entertaining book fast enough! Bryan Gilmer knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. I could not put this book down!
Gilmer has done it again in his second thriller featuring Investigator Jeff Davis Swaine. Jeff has a new love in his life and things are going well until her brother-in-law dies tragically in a car crash ... or does he? There are lots of unanswered questions and inconsistencies that pull Swaine into the case and start the reader on a fast-paced, nail biting journey through a mind consumed by revenge. There are many clever twists and turns in the plot that make it hard to put down and it is exciting to read about places that are familiar to us Southerners. I can't wait for the next installment of the Swaine thrillers!
This dark, well-plotted thriller will appeal especially to readers familiar with the voices and places of the North Carolina Piedmont, where Gilmer's really, really bad Bad Guy is almost a kind of redneck Iago and his good guy detective echoes many other characters back at least to Chandler. Read it.
A friend suggested that I read this so I did. I am not a thriller person at all but I decided to check it out. This kept me interested from tart to finish.
What happens years after a young kid in school has been bullied and humiliated by his heartless peers? It ain't nice. The beauty of this book is that you don't know who to root for -- the original victim or the new victims? A fast-paced read sharply written in a journalist's knowing hand.
